Custom koi ponds and pondless waterfalls designed and built for Austin yards, with the rock work, filtration and plantings that keep water clear.
A koi pond installation is a complete little ecosystem built into your yard, not just a hole with a liner in it. We shape the excavation, set the underlayment and liner, build the rock and gravel that line the bottom and the edges, and plumb in a skimmer, a biological filter and a pump sized to the volume of water. Then come the plants, the waterfall or stream if you want one, and the fish.
Every piece has a job. The rock and gravel hold the beneficial bacteria that process waste. The plants compete with algae for the same nutrients. The circulation keeps the whole body of water moving so nothing goes stagnant. Built that way, the pond largely runs itself, which is the entire point of an ecosystem pond rather than a decorative basin you have to fight with.
In the Field
These are the two builds we are asked about most, and they suit different households. A koi pond holds an open body of water, deep enough to keep fish through a Central Texas summer, with filtration and plants that keep it in balance. You get fish to watch, water lilies, and a surface that reflects the sky.
A pondless waterfall runs the same moving water over the same rock work, but at the bottom the water disappears into a hidden basin of gravel instead of collecting in an open pool. You get the sound and the look with no open water and no fish to care for, which is why it is the common pick for families with small children. We build both, and we would rather talk through the trade-offs standing in your yard than guess at it over the phone.
We have been a Master Certified Aquascape Contractor since 2007. Aquascape is the system most ecosystem ponds in the country are built on, and that matters to you in a practical way rather than as a badge on a website. It means the skimmer, the filter and the pump in your yard are standard, documented equipment that somebody can source parts for in ten years, instead of a one-off assembly nobody else can diagnose.
It also means the build follows a method. Pond sizing, filtration capacity, rock placement and plant selection all have a right answer for a given volume of water, and we are certified against that standard rather than improvising on site.
Central Texas is hard on water. Summers run long, water warms fast, and warm water holds less oxygen than cool water does, which is the single biggest reason fish struggle here. Depth is the answer to most of that, because a deeper pond keeps a cooler layer the sun cannot reach. Shade placement helps, and so does real circulation.
The ground is the other factor. Much of the Austin area sits on limestone and caliche close to the surface, so excavation is slower and the shape of what we can dig is partly decided by what we hit. None of that stops a good pond from going in. It just has to be designed for the conditions instead of copied from a build that works somewhere milder.
The job starts in your yard, not on paper. We look at where you want the water, what you will see from the kitchen window or the patio, how the ground falls, how much sun the spot gets, and where equipment can reach without tearing up the place. Your part is mostly deciding: how big, whether you want koi or just plants, whether the water should fall loudly or move quietly, and what style of rock fits the house.
We sort out the power, the plumbing runs, the liner, the filtration and the fill, and we walk you through running it before we leave. We are happy to give advice and a free estimate on a new feature, so an early conversation costs you nothing but the time to walk the yard with us.
