Ongoing care for koi ponds, pondless waterfalls and fountains around Austin, from filter service and water checks to seasonal adjustments.
Water feature maintenance is the regular visit that keeps a pond, waterfall or fountain doing what it did the week it was finished. On a service call we clean out the skimmer and the filter media, pull leaves and debris before they break down into muck, check the pump and the plumbing for wear, and look at water clarity.
We also trim and divide plants that have taken over, treat with beneficial bacteria when the pond needs a push, and look over the rock work and the waterline. If you keep koi, we look at the fish too, because behavior is often the first sign that something in the water has shifted. Small things get caught while they are still small, which is most of the value.
In the Field
A water feature is alive, and living things drift. Leaves fall in, plants spread, bacteria colonies rise and crash with the temperature, and pumps slowly lose output as they wear. None of that is dramatic on any given day, which is exactly why it gets away from people.
By the time the water is green or the waterfall has gone quiet, you are not doing maintenance any more, you are doing a rescue. Regular service keeps the ecosystem in balance, catches a failing pump before it strands your fish without circulation, and spreads the work across the year instead of saving it all for one bad weekend.
The work changes with the season here. Through the heat of summer the priority is oxygen and circulation, because warm water holds less oxygen and the biological filter needs it to keep processing waste. That is also when evaporation is highest, so water level and top-off get attention.
In the cooler months the load shifts to debris. Leaf drop fills a skimmer quickly, and anything that stays in the water breaks down and feeds algae later. Spring is when a pond wakes up and the bacteria have to re-establish, which is the moment a feature either clears up or spends the whole year behind. Service timed to those shifts is worth more than the same visit repeated blindly every month.
A good share of our maintenance work is on ponds, waterfalls and fountains somebody else installed. That is worth saying out loud, because plenty of companies will only touch their own builds, which leaves homeowners stuck when the original installer is gone.
If you inherited a feature with the house, or the company that put it in no longer answers, we can look at what is there and tell you honestly what it needs. Sometimes that is routine service. Sometimes the build is short on filtration or depth, and the real answer is pond upgrades rather than more maintenance on a system that was never going to keep up.
